Part 2 in finishing the new album Jinsei

The next stepping stone to finish the new recorded music in Japan last February 2020 is on his way.

I booked a mixing slot in July at Wedgeview studio with mix master Udo Pannekeet who also worked on the first album, Tokyo’s Bad Boys. Together we will work to finish the music recorded in Nagoya together with this great group off people.

The road to this new album has been and still is an adventure. The global threat that the corona virus brought us also had its reflections on this whole endeavour and the future is still unclear but we are in good spirit and want to finish this music for you all to hear.

This whole plan to record an new album started about 2 years ago, and after some time of writing tunes, working on a period to fit all the band members within a relatively short time period was a big challenge. I must say big shout out to Brother Satoshi Tokuda who did a tremendous part of the whole organisation in Japan.

Also my warm thanks to all the people that were involved in getting this project started with funding, input and support: Jelle and Mariette Posthumus, Jacob Bedaux, Eddy and Ella Westveer, John Hepburn, Erik Hanegraaf, Kazuhiro Questkazu Sato, Jeroen Berloth, Sjoerd Beunder, Paul van Dun.

Free time with friends

On 24 of February I started my trip to Japan, and after an 11 hour flight arrived at Narita Airport.
My first couple of days were spent getting used to the new time zone I was in and to meet up with friends around Tokyo. After this free time we would do 5 gigs to explore the new songs before the recording days in Nagoya. You can find more details in my blog section on my website, although it needs updating.

On day 2 of my free time I got news about the studio we booked for this recording, the corona virus made it impossible to record there and after hard work of Satoshi San we found a studio. Also, the engineer Kazuya Nagae was very committed to the whole project and would still be the main engineer/recording man for this project. At Joy 601 studio we found the room to record.

Time to play!

After these free days (3 in total) I had my first duo gig with my pianist Shunichi Yanagi and as a surprise to me Yuki Nakae also came and played some tunes with us. After this concert I would meet up with my bass player Satoshi Tokuda, he came from Nagoya and would join me the rest of this trip in Tokyo and was going to stay with me in the hotel I booked around Asakusa area.

The first concert with an almost complete line up was at one of my favourite places to play, Studio Wuu in Kashiwa. Together with Gaku Hasegawa on drums and Yuki Nakae on tenor made this a Quintet line up. The next day we did a concert with a no drum setup and we finished with a Quintet gig at another great venue, Salt Peanuts, Ekoda. This was the last show in Tokyo area and I and Satoshi had a late night drive to Nagoya, the drive that took us about 6 hours. The following day I had free time and spent it with Satoshi visiting some premium ramen shops in Nagoya.

Following was the last gig at Jazz Inn Lovely, Nagoya, and this time with a trumpet line up, Yuuki Hirate would join this last show on trumpet and flugel horn before joining us in the studio the next 2 days.

Recording day 1

First days are usually a bit hectic and this one was no exception, although we could start fairly soon after arriving. Already the studio engineer with his crew were busy setting up the drum kit and double bass, the piano tuner was almost finished. Around 13:00 we started with the first tune of the day.

On this first day it all came together and after the arrival of Yuichiro Tokuda we were complete for the first time. Yuichiro was only going to join the recording on this first day with sopranino and alto sax so the focus was on the tunes he would join. We finished this first day around 20:00 and went out to an isakaya close to the hotel me, Yuki, Yanagi and Gaku were staying. We had a great night with food, drinks.

Recording day 2

The second day recording we started 11:00 with recording. Most of the tunes we played before but never with this line up so before recording we spent some time talking about the music and did some short dry runs on some of the songs. Around 19:00 we finished this second day, after some relaxing and waiting for all the tracks uploaded to the hard drive I bought to bring back to music pro tools session we said by to Yuki Nagae, he would take a late night shinkansen back to Tokyo. Together with the rest of the band we found a nice place for some drinks and food. Both Gaku and Yanagi would drive back that night to Tokyo, a trip that takes about 6 hours. After saying goodbye to the guys I went back to my hotel, the next day I would travel back to Tokyo with the shinkansen to spent my last 2 days there.
